Period Girl

Before I started using Facebook I ended my sentences with periods. However, frequently I now end a written sentence or a conversation with a smiley face :), a wink ;), or the ever popular exclamation point!. It's really quite unnatural for me to end sentences this way, but now it's become something that I feel that I must do in order to present a facade of being happy, peppy, or just plain excited about life. I don't end normal every day conversations with a shout, or an exclamation of joy, unless I have just been presented with a really lovely piece of chicken. That's just not who I am. In real life I don't even know how to wink, I guess I'm not visually coordinated enough to pull it off, and I can't really think of many occasions where I would end a sentence with a wink anyway. I suppose that I just want to fit in and seem as sparkling as everyone else in cyber world. But at heart I am still a period girl.

  1. I apologize, but I was looking forward to a post about 'PMS' :) I must say that "I don't end normal every day conversations with a shout, or an exclamation of joy, unless I have just been presented with a really lovely piece of chicken." has got to be my ALL TIME FAVE SENTENCE OF YOURS!!! and yes, I was shouting. xoxo :D

  2. Love your post! I have found myself using a smiley face in some of my posts. My thing is that for whatever reason, when I write I many times spell both words out instead of combining them into a contraction. With my posts I seek out all these two words and contract them, as somehow it seems more modern. We all have our little querks. I too love your sentence on the lovely piece of chicken. You are priceless!

  3. I use more exclamation points than I would like, mostly because I worry that I'll seem too stern or serious if I don't.

I probably use more smiley faces than most people, but that feels totally natural to me. The funny thing is, I'm not a very "smiley" person in real life.

  4. I so relate. I have always beena period gal and yet the internet has made me more effusive and likely to put my emoticon on my sleeve. I had to, just there, had to hold back from adding an emoticon.
I too love this post. I love it so much that I want to use exclamation marks, many in fact.xo

  8. Yep, I'm the same exact way. Verbally, I don't say anything with enthusiasm, or a sense of excitement--I'm kind of dry, I guess. But this whole online thing, let me tell you, people think I'm a happy-go-lucky person! :)

    Found you on BPOTW.
